Steve and Cindy Berson first approached us to assist them in evaluating properties where they were considering building their new Vermont home. The property chosen is within a few miles of their Stowe pizza business and offers open ridgeline views to the north and east. The building site is reached via a 1200 foot curvilinear driveway that winds around exposed ledge, groves of mature forest and offers a prospect of a 1/4 acre pond before arriving at the shingle style home.

Our clients requested that the house have an open main floor plan that would take greatest advantage of the sunlight and views. Because of the sloping site, they also wanted several places that the main floor was immediately accessible to the land. We achieved this at the screen porch located to the west of the living room and the main entry and mudroom entry. The living room ceiling is timber-framed with local spruce and hemlock beams. Both the kitchen and stairway components were made mostly from cherry, by A. R. Foss, a local cabinet maker.

The second floor stair landing is used as a reading nook tucked under the roof slope with an eyebrow window for peaking views to the south. Also upstairs is a spacious east-facing master bedroom, bath and closet suite and a guest bedroom and bath.

The area above the garage is reached by a second stairway off of the mudroom. Two shed dormers create generous volume with great cross light and ventilation. Here, Steve and Cindy have a combination media room, home office and additional space for guests.
