The owners' goals for the design of their new home in Stowe, Vermont primarily focused around three significant requests: 1. the house would take its architectural cues from the unadorned farmhouses built in the late 19th century; 2. the house would make the most of distant mountain views, the solar track of the sun and the pastoral site; 3. the disciplined budget would provide a 2500 SF, 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath compact house.
Through the addition of two generous porches, we created outdoor spaces for the family to gather and share their appreciation for the agrarian beauty of the site. The porches also serve to break up the simple cost effective geometry of the house.
Slightly oversized two over two double hung windows help to change the perceived scale of the wall composition by adding just the right amount of detail. Inside, the public rooms flow easily together to share the views and day lighting.
A connector and barn/garage is being planned and will complete the architectural aspects of the homestead.
