The owners of this log home interviewed several design firms to find just the right team for their addition project. Their request was for a kitchen, family room and screen porch addition that would complement and enhance the exterior and interior qualities of the property. Our solution was to design the new space as a true timber frame structure with soaring and generous light filled volumes.
The addition was built on the east side of the existing house and takes full advantage of extraordinary southern views looking towards the Worcester Range. The prow of the existing living room was complemented by the glass filled gable in the new family area. This gable is opposite the kitchen island so that the cook d'jour can enjoy the southerly connection to the outdoors. With the cathedral ceiling of the screen porch on the east, the summer morning sun reaches well into the family room area.
White cedar "V" groove paneling is used on the ceiling and wall surfaces to match the interior finish of the existing log home. The river rock masonry seen in these photos also matches the oversized stone fireplace in the living room. For the exterior, wide pine boards installed board and batten style, rough side out were selected in keeping with the rustic look and feel of the existing log construction.
As is typical of our work, our clients were very involved in the design process and they actively participated with the general contractor, the kitchen cabinet artisan, landscape contractor and other trades people to achieve to the quality addition to their home.
